Biography: Walter E. "Gene" Chandler, 92 of Bucyrus passed away on Saturday January 13, 2018 at Altercare of Bucyrus.
Gene was born October 23, 1925 in Bucyrus to the late Virgil Boyd and Bernice Helen (Burk) Chandler. He was married July 14, 1946 and was married over 70 years to Marjorie E. (Heinlen) Chandler who preceded him in death on Sept. 16, 2016. He was also preceded in death by daughter Susan Jane Wertz; infant twins Joel and Jody Ann; grandson David Wertz along with twin grandchildren.
Gene is survived by children Steven Chandler, Bucyrus; Christy (Jeff) Schell, Bucyrus; grandchildren Julie (Dwight) Sipe, Sycamore; Jody Wertz, Bucyrus; Joel Chandler, Las Angeles, CA; Lee (Matthew ) Chandler Gallant, Memphis, TN; Andy (Judy) Schell, Bucyrus; and Abbey (Josh Seedle) Schell, Columbus; great grandchildren Layla and Jackson Nauman; David Schell; Baylon, Odin, and Jade Seedle; son in law Ed Wertz and wife Sandy of Bucyrus; and sister Irene Russ of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Gene graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1943 where he was a standout in football and continued to play for the Semi-Pro Football Green Hornets. He was the fifth generation of his family to be in the plastering business.
Gene was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during WWII in the South Pacific. He was a member of the American Legion Post 181, Lifetime member of AMVETS Post 27, and a member of the VFW Post 1078. Also Gene was an active member of St. John's United Church of Christ where he had served on the board. Gene was an avid pilot and flew for the Crawford County Sheriff Dept. as a special deputy.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday at 2:00 pm in the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Platt officiating, burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until the time of the service. Memorials may be made to the Cr. Co.
