Chatfield

Helen Irene Ross, 94, of Chatfield, Ohio passed away at Carlisle Place on March 12, 2026, surrounded by family. Helen is preceded in death by her parents; husband Myron Ross; sister, Ruth Loy and brothers, Wayne (Betty) Scheffler and Milton Scheffler.

Helen is survived by children, Glenn (Charlene) Ross and Janeen (Robert) McFarling; grandchildren, Joseph Ross, Lauren McFarling and Matthew McFarling; brother-in-law, Wilmer Loy; sister-in-law, Julia Scheffler; as well as nieces and nephews.

Born in rural Crawford County Ohio to the late Frank and Bertha (Leonberger) Scheffler, Helen grew up on a small family farm where she learned the values of hard work, the continuity of community, the foundation of a strong Christian faith, the nurturing love of family, and making do with what you had.

Her response to the ridiculousness of modern life was just to say, ‘Oh for Pete’s Sake.’ She often found the best education she ever received came from tending the garden, baking tasty pies and cakes, helping around the farm, and caring for family and close friends.

In 1955, she married the love of her life, Myron Ross, in a simple ceremony at Good Hope Lutheran Church. Together they built a life marked by quiet devotion, shared laughter, and an unshakable partnership. Helen seemed to just know she found the right one. Myron preceded her in death in 1998 after 46 years of marriage.

Helen was a homemaker in the truest sense—her home was always open, the coffee pot was always ready, and there was always room for one more at the table. She was known for her cinnamon and pecan rolls that could draw raves from the most discriminating palate. She was an expert seamstress. She crafted many garments for the family including dresses for herself and Janeen with the use of her trusted Singer sewing machine. Her skills with crochet were shared with many of her family and friends.

Helen was a faithful member of the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Chatfield. She graduated from Holmes Liberty class of ’49. Helen farmed for many years of her life with Myron. She did a lot of gardening and canning in that time. She loved flowers, especially her roses. Helen was well known for her baking, entering competitions at fairs and wining Best of Show at both the Crawford County and the Ohio State Fairs. She was a big supporter of the Buckeye Central Bucks sports programs, including basketball and football. She attended many family members' games. She enjoyed traveling with Myron and her family and friends.

The family will receive friends at the Nazareth Lutheran Church, from 10AM-12PM, Friday March 20. Services will follow the visiting hours at 12PM at the church. Burial is at Nazareth Lutheran Cemetery. Pastor Kevin Mohr is officiating services. Memorials may be made to the Nazareth Lutheran Church.
