Dolores “Dolly” M. Butterman, 83, of Bucyrus passed away peacefully on Monday morning at home.
Dolly was born on August 4, 1939, in Bucyrus to the late Albert and Hazel (Bigler) Wurm. She was the third of nine in their Catholic family. She married Joel Butterman in 1956. They spent 60 happy years together before his death in 2016.
In the intervening years, Dolly made their white-pillared house on Rogers Street into a true home. Whether you visited for a cup of tea, to pray the rosary, or to buy religious items from the Cornerstone, the religious goods store she operated until the late 1990s, you were treated to Dolly’s trademark kindness, gentleness, and generosity. You could also count on a delicious homemade treat — bread, chocolate chip cake, or her famous coffee cake.
Dolly was an exceptional mother. She (and Joel) raised eight children with inexhaustible love. Her oldest son, Steve, preceded her in death in 2020. Her seven surviving children are Laura Webster, Bucyrus; Juliana (Gary) Weber, Bucyrus; Andy (Karen) Butterman, Bucyrus; Amy (Rod) Frizzell, Bucyrus; Mary (Mike) Atwood, Bucyrus; Bill (Tammy) Butterman, Mt. Gilead; and Tim (Karletta) Butterman, Bucyrus.
She was a beloved grandmother to many, passing on her faith, patience, and kindness to generations of children who loved spending time with her.
Her grandchildren are Craig (Diana), Crystal (Jared), Cory, Curt (Loraine), Chelsa, Cherie, Jessica, Arron (Jen), Nikki (Matt), Eric (Natalie), Brittany (Casey), Ryan, Kaleigh (Kenny), Jeryn, Adam, Annie (Brandon), Elizabeth (Kristian), RoseMarie (Christian), Susanna, Anthony, Michael, Matthew, Hayley, Neil, Mersadece, Merryah (Kyle), Merranda (Tim), Joel, Paul, Luke, Kevin, Kerissa (Brock), Cieria (Tony) and Josh.
Her great-grandchildren are Alex, Blaise, Sierra, Emmelia, Leo, Millie, Mason, Logan, Korbin, Makina, Casey, Justin, Avah, Leah, Jayda, Kaylee, Madeline, Jacob, Seth, Kiersten, Avanell, Everly, Savannah, Cambria, Grady, Addison, Jordyn, Morgan, Madelyn, Myles, Drew, Charli, Willa, Parker, Stella, Knox, Gary Lee, A.J., Roger, Hazel, Vayda, Ben, Bently, Denaleigh, Nevaeh, Vayda, Kamdyn, Kole, Cora, Dallas, Rhett, Willow, Ivy, Kyliee, Nataliee and Grant, and one great-great-grandchild, Mikel.
She is also greatly missed by her five beloved sisters Betty Haldeman, Julie Gatchell, Joyce (Tom) Fleury, Patty Burling and Brenda (Ken) Lawson, sisters-in-law, Debbie Wurm and Sandy Butterman, and many nieces, nephews, and other loved ones.
In addition to her parents, husband and son, Dolly is preceded in death by stepfather Bob Ziegler, brothers Jim (Betty) Wurm, Charlie (Mona) Wurm and John Wurm, in-laws, Norman Haldeman, Doug Gatchell, Lillian (John) Siamas, Janet (Dick) Inscho and Glen Butterman, grandson Timothy, and great-grandchild, Shyann.
The only thing more precious than her family was Dolly’s love of God. She was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where she was involved in many organizations and initiatives over the years. Notably, she organized Eucharistic Adoration for decades, encouraging countless people to spend a quiet hour in the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Still, many members of Holy Trinity remember Dolly the most for her quiet devotion. She was always present at Mass, usually accompanied by her sister, Betty. They were often among the first to arrive and the last to leave. It is precisely that faith that gives her loved ones comfort that they will see her again in heaven.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 11:00am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father Paul Fahrbach as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Holy Trinity Section of Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home on Thursday from 3:00pm-5:00pm and 6:00pm-8:00pm with the Rosary being recited at 7:30pm. The family suggest memorials be made to the Holy Trinity Catholic Church Holy Trinity St. Vincent de Paul or Rosary Altar and expressions of sympathy can be left at munzpirnstill.com
