DeMont Elwood Sponseller, 91 of Huron~Beloved Husband, Adored Father, Cherished Grandfather and Admired Great Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Cousin and Friend passed away on August 13, 2026 at Reserve Care Stein Hospice in Sandusky Ohio after a brief illness.

DeMont was born on August 8, 1935 in Sulphur Springs to the late Raymond and Audrey (Hall) Sponseller.

DeMont attended school in Sulphur Springs where he met the love of his life and wife of 72 years Carol Ann (Martin) Sponseller in the 3rd grade. He graduated from Sulphur Springs 1953 at the top of his class and starred on the track, the baseball field and the basketball court where he perfected the 3 point shot and Carol cheered him on.

DeMont and Carol married on December 26, 1954 and began an adventure that would take them across the country to California and back to Ohio where they lived in Bucyrus, Tiffin, Bowling Green and finally Huron for the past 37 years.

With the love and support of Carol~DeMont received a Bachelor’s Degree from Heidelberg University in 1957 where he was honored with a spot in the Athletic Hall of Fame for baseball and basketball in 2003.

While in California, DeMont taught Math and P.E., played minor league baseball and coached pro baseball pitcher Fernando Arroyo.

DeMont earned a Master’s Degree from Bowling Green State University and retired from Alto U.S., Inc. as an Inventory Control Manger.

After retirement he enjoyed working and playing golf at Thunderbird Hills Golf Club in Huron.

DeMont was an avid sports fan and was loyal to THE Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Browns, Cavs, and Indians. He also enjoyed watching local youth sports.

DeMont was honest, good, intelligent, quiet, steady and strong. He modeled the love of our Heavenly Father and was the foundation of our family’s faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. He will be missed every day by those he loved most~his grateful family.

DeMont is survived by his wife Carol (Martin) Sponseller, daughters Julia (Douglas) Schiefer of Sandusky and Lisa (Timothy) Parkison of Huron, Ohio; grandchildren and great grandchildren Heather (Erik) Hudak of St. Joseph, MI and their sons Evan and Owen, Lesley (Joel) Hern of Cincinnati, OH and their children Ethan and Jane, as well as grandson Robert Schiefer of Michigan.

DeMont was preceded in death by his son Philip Sponseller and one sister Beatrice Martin and her husband Robert.

Private Graveside Services were held in Brokensword Cemetery on Wednesday August 19, 2026. The family suggests memorials be made in the form of contributions to Reserve Care Stein Hospice in Sandusky, Ohio. Expressions of sympathy can be left at www.munzpirnstill.com
